Race Report for The Big Reach Enduro 26/8/12

1:40 pm in Uncategorized by Danielle Hall

The Big Reach Enduro
The sun shone as riders filtered in to take part in The Big Reach Enduro held as a tribute to Royal Marine James Wright who was killed in action last August. The venue ,Bere Wood, had been laid out to reflect the special nature of this event and more than one rider commented that they had arrived at a B.E.C. round!
There was a fair bit of excitement at signing on/scrutineering about riding this new and challenging venue, so much so that Aaron Poolman nearly forgot to put fuel in his bike! But it didn’t stop him leading the race for the bulk of the first lap.
With a full line up of 120 riders taking part, competition was hot in all classes but the widely varied terrain spread the field out with those able to pick a good line making sift progress while others got caught out by the numerous small ditches and bogs that punctuated the course. Si Wakely took the lead after the first lap and remained there, but Brad king preparing for his first ISDE was never far behind came in second looking on good form. With Aaron Poolman in third. Meanwhile the Expert battle as raging between Mark Cornick, Darren Hounsell, Joe Dyke and RORE stalwart James Boyce, this being the finishing order all on 9 laps. In the meantime well up with the Experts a Vets tussle between Dave Coles, Euan Harrison and Wayne Player came out in favour of the very consistent Dave using all of his BEC experience to avoid the ruts and roots that were now forming around the course.
In the Clubman class David Parker took the win but was kept honest throughout by Marcus Clare and Spen Brookes who was one of two riders with enough energy left to help us take down the course down the other being 15 year old Sportsman Ross Curtis finally leaving the venue with us at 7pm, thanks lads.
Last but not least the biggest class of the day, the Sportsman class probably had the toughest ride, some trying their hand at Enduro for the first time many being friends and relatives of the Wright family inspired by James to give it a go in the true spirit of the event. Although many found it tough ,which can be seen in the variation in lap times, only two DNF’d the same number as from the Champs class! Five riders completed seven laps, Seb Chilvers winning by a small margin from Paul Gentle, with Finn Davey close behind. A special award was presented by the Wright Family to 19 year old Alex Morgan who continued smiling all day and kept many older and more experienced riders at bay for the duration of a tough but enjoyable event. A special mention has to go to Lloyd Gore who completed the event on a super low ground clearance TTR 125 surprising us all with a finish and smiling throughout.
Many thanks to all who helped make this event what it was, as well as Char Borough Estate for providing their awesome venue free of charge thus enabling us to raise in excess of £3000 for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust. Finally thanks to all the riders who supported this event.
The Wright family and Dan & Danielle RORE
